Chef-Driven Dinners vs. Catering: What Hiring a Private Chef in Chicago Means for You

People call us for all sorts of reasons — a milestone birthday, an anniversary, a quiet Tuesday someone decided to make beautiful — and almost every first conversation includes the same question: “So… is this catering?” It’s fair, and the honest answer is no, not really — and that difference is the whole reason Vendador exists.

Catering serves a crowd. A chef-driven dinner is built for your table.

Traditional catering is, at heart, a logistics business: food is prepared in a central kitchen, transported, held warm, and served at scale. It’s wonderful for what it’s designed to do. But the menu is usually fixed, the cooking already happened hours ago and somewhere else, and the chef is rarely the person in front of you. A chef-driven event flips that. As a private chef, I’m cooking in your kitchen, in real time, around a menu we designed together. The scallop is seared minutes before it reaches you. Catering brings food to an event; a chef-driven dinner makes the food the event.

What a private chef actually brings to your home

When you book a private dining experience with Vendador (link to /privatedining), here’s what arrives:

  • A fully customized tasting menu, built around your tastes, dietary needs, and the occasion.

  • The restaurant, brought to you — equipment, plating, polish, and a team to run service.

  • Cooking, service, and cleanup — you wake up to a clean kitchen, not a sink full of pans.

  • A beverage program to match (link to /beverage) — curated wine pairings, a full bar, or a live mixology moment with a bartender shaking cocktails tableside.

Let’s talk about the money, honestly

Our private dining events start with a $2,000 event minimum, and signature tasting menus begin at $365 per person. Not every evening needs to be twelve courses, though — we have a range of event models, including options under $365 per person depending on format. If you have a number in mind, tell us; we’re good at designing something special inside a real budget.

Do you work with planners? (Yes — happily.)

Some of our favorite events come through planners and designers. A great planner owns the room — florals, timeline, tablescape — and we own the plate. If you’re a planner reading this, reach out (link to /contact); we make your job easier.

Why hosts on the North Shore (and across Chicago) are making the switch

The North Shore especially has embraced the chef-driven dinner — hosts who entertain often and would rather be a guest at their own party than spend the night in the kitchen. Whether you’re in Winnetka, Lake Forest, Evanston, or the heart of the city, we bring the restaurant to you.
