How a Private Chef Handles Allergies and Dietary Restrictions
Every host knows the small anxiety. One guest is vegetarian. Another cannot have shellfish. Someone's partner is not just gluten-free, but celiac, and you are not sure whether to build the whole menu around it or just hope it works out.
When you cook the way I do, this stops being a problem and becomes part of the craft. At a restaurant, a dietary restriction often means the kitchen swaps you onto a sadder version of the meal while everyone else eats the real thing. In your home, with a menu I am building from scratch, no one has to eat the lesser plate. I can design a course so the vegetarian version is not an afterthought, but its own beautiful dish sitting proudly next to the others.
It starts with one honest conversation
Before the night, I ask about every restriction and every strong dislike at the table. Not only the allergies, but the preferences too. The person who cannot stand fennel. The guest who will not touch anything spicy. I would rather know all of it up front and build around it than surprise someone. That conversation is where a menu that works for everyone begins. We truly encourage you to call or text your guests.
If you learn something new about them that makes the dinner extra-special, it will save me. The last thing I ever want to do is have to rifle around in your fridge after the guests have received the first course because you didn’t realize someone is vegan. We want to exceed their expectations!
Real allergies get real care
There is a difference between a preference and a genuine allergy, and I treat them differently. For a true allergy, I am careful about cross-contact, about ingredients hiding in stocks and sauces, about the whole path a dish takes to the plate. A host should never have to play kitchen inspector at their own party. That vigilance is my job and my entire team is Servesafe Allergen Certified.
Everyone eats like the guest of honor
The goal is simple. No one at your table should feel like the exception. The vegetarian, the guest avoiding pork, the person with the serious allergy, each of them should get a dinner that feels made for them, because it was. When that happens, no one is comparing plates. Everyone is just eating well.
